HOW IT WORKS: This is an outdoor walking scavenger hunt game suitable for a medium to large park or recreation area (it was originally designed for a state park). It can be adapted to a campground.
You'll need about 2 hours minimum for this hunt . Your group will be divided into teams of up to 10 people. Each team will receive a collection bag containing a digital camera, their challenge sheet - the hunt itself - and various supplies. They will then embark on the scavenger hunt, taking pictures, obtaining specific items and completing a creative project. All the challenges are worth valuable points and there are some bonus point challenges as well. At the conclusion of the hunt, the teams will prepare an optional final presentation while you “grade” their challenge sheets to find the winners based on point total (award certificates are included with this hunt). THE WINNING TEAM will have had the most fun as a team while collecting the most points.
For the TEAM BUILDING VERSION, there will be added team meets where team members will move to other teams and additional challenges (included) will be given out. At the conclusion of the hunt, after the teams present a creative and inspiring final presentation, we recommend you have a debriefing session using the team assessment form included with your kit.
TEAM OBJECTIVE: Form an efficient and effective team that communicates well, works by consensus and has a definite plan of action to complete this adventure hunt.
THIS IS WHAT THE TEAMS WILL BE MEASURED ON: 1) Their ability to complete this scavenger hunt by forming a successful, functional team that works by consensus and in which all members participate equally and with enthusiasm. 2) Their communication skills. 3) Their ability to find the hidden strengths in their team members. 4) Their ability to regularly review and evaluate team effectiveness and be willing to take action. 5) Their creative abilities. 6) Their point total.
EXAMPLES: Our Operation When Nature Calls hunt includes 20 pictures challenges (they'll make GREAT memories of the day), a list of items to collect (15), projects (creating 2 things and a little quiz), and a final team presentation. We have lots of different types of challenges to complete to keep it interesting, engaging and fun, fun, fun!
1.
Have your most artistic team member collaborate with someone you've
never met to draw a picture of nature. Take a picture of them in action.
2. Take a picture of the team member who was born the furthest away from
here hugging a tree while all other team members arrange themselves in a pattern of some sort (tallest to shortest for example).
3.
Find a cool looking rock containing at least 5 distinct colors.
Our nature
scavenger hunt was A COMPLETE SUCCESS! I am the Activities Director
for a 271 site Campground in South Central Pennsylvania. I
thought perhaps I would have about 5 teams....ended up with 25! (luckily
I was prepared for 30)! Anyway, people are still absolutely raving
about what a blast they had and they can't wait for next years'! Your
package was superb! Kudos! Thanks Again! Heather

NUMBER OF TEAMS or PARTICIPANTS: Unlimited number of teams with a minimum of 3 or 4 to a maximum of 10 people per team. We do recommend one facilitator/helper for every 2-3 teams to keep things running smoothly, especially when you grade team efforts and tally up completed challenges.
What if you only have a few people participating in scavenger hunt? Instead of dividing them into teams, you can keep them all on one team and have them race against the clock, giving the single team a time limit to complete each section of the hunt (photos, find items, etc.), report back to you for the next section and so on until the hunt is complete.
LENGTH OF THE HUNT: 2 to 4 hours, depending on the size of your group*: 5 minutes for opening instructions; a minimum of 1 1/2 hours for the scavenger hunt and about 1/2 hour or more for the grading, (optional) team presentations and awards presentation. *The more teams you have, the more time it will take.
PRE-HUNT PREP TIME: For up to 6 teams, you can put our scavenger hunts together in about 4-6 hours (includes shopping for supplies, reading the scavenger hunt and prepping the materials); as you add teams, you'll need to add time to the pre-hunt prep. You mostly need to print (and perhaps edit) the documents included with the kit, pack the collection bags and you'll need to get team prizes, digital cameras and other inexpensive supplies like clipboards and pens. Our facilitator guide provides a supply checklist for you.
